Itinerary
Day 1 Cairo
Welcome to the land of the Pharaoh’s and the start of your family holiday! Arrive Cairo, included transfer to hotel and overnight.
Day 2 Pyramids & Camels
Visit the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza Plateau. Sole survivors from the ancient Greek-listed Seven Wonders of the World. Gaze in awe at the largest of the three great pyramids - Cheops, constructed from over 2.5 million limestone blocks it took more than 20 years to construct. Afterward enjoy a camel ride accross the desert sands.
Day 3 Egyptian Museum, Citadel & Khan el Khalili Bazaar
Today, venture in search of the treasures of King Tutankhamen, mummies and more at the Egyptian Museum. Later tour the Islamic Citadel of Saladin with views looking down over the old city, watching people go about their daily life. Conclude the day with a market walk through the bustling Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Time to freshen up, this evening take the comfortable overnight sleeper train to Aswan.
Day 4 Aswan markets
Explore the Nubian city of Aswan with a guided walk of the local market and souq. Stunningly situated right on the Nile, a walk along the river corniche to view the many boats is a real treat, as is Aswan bazaar. Free afternoon.
Day 5 Aswan
Free morning or opt for the morning excursion to Abu Simbel. The remainder of the afternoon at leisure to relax by the pool or explore Aswan your way.
Day 6 Aswan felucca sailing
This morning we undertake a felucca cruise around some of the islands located on the Nile, stopping at Sahal island where we visit a local village and school (if open); sometimes there is even a local football game in action. Lunch will be served in the home of an Egyptian family followed by the train north to Luxor, one of the world’s greatest open-air museums. The 4000 year old site of ancient Thebes, known today as Luxor, is our base for the next three days.
Day 7 Luxor temple by night
Early this morning as the sun rises, we have the option to go hot air ballooning. Floating above, we look down upon temples, monuments and village life. Later we tour Karnak Temple. More than a temple, Karnak is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, pylons, statuettes and obelisks. Built on a grand scale, Karnak is probably Egypt’s finest ancient temple. Free afternoon or wander along Luxor’s historic waterfront. This evening, we travel in horse-drawn carriages to the illuminated Temple of Luxor where we enjoy a tour in the cool evening air. Rest of evening free.
Day 8 Valley of the Kings
Rise and shine! Today, we visit Luxor’s legendary West Bank - home to the famous Valleys of the Kings and Queens, the imposing colonnaded temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the gigantic Colossi of Memnon. See how the ancient Egyptians confounded tomb robbers with the construction of elaborate catacombs, once filled with treasures and highly decorated to allow the pharaoh passage to the afterlife. Tonight, we return to Cairo by sleeper train.
Days 9-10 Cairo
Have a free day to enjoy Cairo your way but taking your transfer to the airport on day 10 and returning home.
Destination Information
Egypt is synonymous with Pharaohs, the pyramids, temples and antiquities from ancient civilisations. And at the centre of these great civilisations lies the Nile River that has influenced their economics, social life, politics and religion. It is the oldest travel destination on earth: Greek and Roman travellers came in 430 BC to wonder at some of the very sights that make it a modern travel destination today. The magnificence of the painted Valley of the Kings, exquisite temples and the pyramids were all sought-after subjects of admiration, and many were already 2,500 years old!
From desert landscapes and dry, rugged mountains that reach to the sea, dusty cities full of exotic sounds and smells, and green strips of agricultural land snaking along the banks of the Nile, Egypt has something to offer all travellers from all walks of life. Spectacular diving in the Red Sea; unique desert experiences, whether on the back of a camel to Mount Sinai or on a jeep safari to the inner oases; the colour and chaos of Cairo and its markets; and felucca cruises on the Nile River are just some of the exotic attractions awaiting visitors. Egypt promises an unforgettable experience of history and relaxation - a mixture of discovery and pleasure.
